6 — AFTER THE WHITE HOUSE: HEALTH SCARES, HUMANITARIAN WORK, HILLARY’S RISE, AND THE CLINTONS’ RETURN TO PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS

PART 6 — AFTER THE WHITE HOUSE: HEALTH SCARES, HUMANITARIAN WORK, HILLARY’S RISE, AND THE RETURN TO PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS

Bill Clinton had spent much of his adult life learning how to survive political crises.

He survived losing elections.

He survived the Republican Revolution of 1994.

He survived two government shutdowns.

He survived impeachment.

He survived a Senate trial.

And on January 20, 2001, he survived something every president eventually faces:

the end of power.

At fifty-four years old, Clinton became a former president.

No longer commander in chief.

No longer occupying the Oval Office.

No longer able to sign legislation or veto bills.

No longer receiving the daily authority that comes with being president of the United States.

But Bill Clinton did not disappear.

In many ways, another enormous chapter of his public life was only beginning.

And only three years after leaving the White House, he would confront a crisis that had nothing to do with Congress, Republicans, elections or investigations.

This time, the threat was inside his own body.

SEPTEMBER 2004

Bill Clinton was fifty-eight.

He was still extraordinarily active.

He traveled.

He gave speeches.

He worked on projects connected to his foundation.

He campaigned for Democratic candidates.

But something wasn’t right.

He had begun experiencing shortness of breath and chest discomfort during physical activity.

Eventually, the symptoms became serious enough that doctors investigated.

What they discovered was alarming.

Clinton had significant blockages in the blood vessels supplying his heart.

Doctors determined that he needed coronary bypass surgery.

On September 6, 2004, at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the former president underwent quadruple bypass surgery.

The operation lasted approximately four hours.

Doctors reported afterward that the surgery had gone as expected and Clinton was recovering normally.

The political fighter who had survived one Washington crisis after another now had to recover from major heart surgery.

And this was different.

There was no campaign strategy.

No television speech capable of fixing it.

No negotiation.

No veto.

No political comeback plan.

There was only medicine, recovery and time.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF VULNERABILITY

Presidents occupy a strange position in American life.

While they’re in office, the machinery around them can make them appear almost larger than ordinary people.

Motorcades.

Security.

Air Force One.

The White House.

Military ceremonies.

World leaders.

Television cameras.

Then suddenly a medical crisis reminds everyone of something obvious but easy to forget:

Presidents are human beings.

They age.

Their bodies change.

They get sick.

They need doctors.

They can become frightened.

Their families can worry about them.

Clinton later spoke publicly about the experience and the changes it encouraged him to make in his lifestyle.

But the 2004 operation would not be his final heart-related procedure.

In 2010, after experiencing chest discomfort, doctors found that one of the grafts from his earlier bypass surgery had become completely blocked.

They inserted two stents into one of his coronary arteries.

Doctors said the procedure went smoothly and that Clinton had not suffered a heart attack.

Once again, he recovered.

And once again, he returned to work.

That pattern would become part of Clinton’s post-presidential story.

Health problem.

Treatment.

Recovery.

Then back to an unusually active public life.

BUT WHAT WAS HE WORKING ON?

When Clinton left office, he possessed something almost no private citizen has:

global access.

He knew presidents.

Prime ministers.

Business leaders.

Philanthropists.

Celebrities.

Scientists.

Activists.

International organizations.

Political leaders from both parties.

He had spent eight years building relationships around the world.

Now he could use those relationships without being responsible for running the United States government.

That became the foundation of his post-presidential identity.

The organization originally established around his presidential library and charitable work eventually developed into the Clinton Foundation.

Its activities expanded into areas including global health, economic development, climate-related initiatives and other philanthropic projects.

Clinton also created the Clinton Global Initiative, which brought together political leaders, business executives, nonprofit organizations and philanthropists around commitments to address international problems.

Whatever people thought of Bill Clinton politically, one thing became clear:

retirement was not going to be quiet.

THEN DISASTER CHANGED HIS ROLE AGAIN

In December 2004, a catastrophic earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean generated a massive tsunami.

Communities across multiple countries were devastated.

Hundreds of thousands of people died.

Millions were affected.

President George W. Bush asked two former presidents to help raise private support for relief efforts.

One was his father:

George H. W. Bush.

The other was the man who had defeated his father in the 1992 presidential election:

Bill Clinton.

Think about that relationship.

In 1992, Clinton and Bush had competed for the most powerful political office in America.

Their campaigns attacked one another.

Only one could win.

Bush lost.

Clinton became president.

More than a decade later, they stood together asking Americans to help people devastated by disaster.

Politics had changed into partnership.

And the relationship became warmer than many people might have expected.

CLINTON AND BUSH

George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton came from different political parties.

Different generations.

Different political traditions.

But their joint humanitarian work created a highly visible friendship.

Then another catastrophe brought them together again.

Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in August 2005.

New Orleans suffered catastrophic flooding.

Communities across Louisiana, Mississippi and surrounding areas experienced enormous destruction.

President George W. Bush again asked former presidents Bush and Clinton to help with private fundraising.

Once more, former political opponents became partners.

For Americans accustomed to seeing politics primarily as conflict, the image carried symbolic power.

Two former presidents.

One Republican.

One Democrat.

Working together after disaster.

Clinton’s post-presidential role was becoming something broader than party politics.

But politics had not left the Clinton family.

In fact, another Clinton was moving toward the center of American political life.

HILLARY WAS NO LONGER JUST A FORMER FIRST LADY

When Bill Clinton left the presidency, Hillary Clinton was beginning an elected political career of her own.

She had won a U.S. Senate seat from New York in 2000.

After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, she became involved in efforts concerning New York’s recovery and health issues affecting first responders.

She won reelection to the Senate in 2006.

By then, speculation about her presidential ambitions had become impossible to ignore.

For decades, Americans had known Hillary as Bill Clinton’s wife.

Then as First Lady of Arkansas.

Then First Lady of the United States.

Now she was Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

And soon she would ask Americans to consider another title.

President.

2007: HILLARY ENTERS THE RACE

In January 2007, Hillary Clinton announced that she was forming a presidential exploratory committee.

The 2008 Democratic nomination contest initially appeared to offer her an extraordinary opportunity.

She had national recognition.

Political organization.

Fundraising ability.

Years of experience.

And one of the most famous Democratic politicians in America available to campaign for her:

Bill Clinton.

But another candidate was rising.

A relatively new senator from Illinois.

His name was Barack Obama.

OBAMA CHANGED EVERYTHING

Barack Obama’s political rise was extraordinarily fast.

He had delivered a nationally celebrated keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Four years later, he was competing seriously for the presidency.

The Democratic primary became a historic contest.

Hillary Clinton sought to become the first woman nominated for president by a major American political party.

Obama sought to become the first Black nominee of a major party—and ultimately the first Black president.

Bill Clinton suddenly occupied a strange position.

For decades, he had been the candidate.

Now he was the candidate’s husband.

He campaigned intensely for Hillary.

He defended her record.

He criticized Obama at times.

And some of his comments during the primary generated controversy.

The former president discovered that campaigning for someone else was not the same as campaigning for himself.

Every statement could affect Hillary’s candidacy.

Every appearance was examined.

And eventually, Hillary lost.

JUNE 2008

After a long primary battle, Barack Obama accumulated enough delegates to become the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Hillary Clinton ended her campaign and endorsed him.

For the Clintons, it was a major disappointment.

They had returned to presidential politics believing Hillary might become the next Clinton in the White House.

Instead, a new Democratic generation had overtaken them.

But what happened next is important.

The Clintons did not leave the Democratic Party.

Hillary campaigned for Obama.

Bill Clinton also supported Obama’s general-election campaign.

In November 2008, Barack Obama defeated Republican John McCain.

America elected its first Black president.

And soon Obama made a decision that surprised some observers.

He offered Hillary Clinton one of the most powerful positions in his administration.

Secretary of State.

FROM RIVAL TO SECRETARY OF STATE

On January 21, 2009, Hillary Rodham Clinton became the 67th secretary of state of the United States.

She would serve until February 1, 2013.

The transformation was remarkable.

Only months earlier, she had fought Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Now she represented his administration around the world.

Bill Clinton’s role changed again.

His wife was no longer merely a former presidential candidate.

She was America’s chief diplomat.

And that created new complications for his own activities.

Because Clinton’s foundation operated internationally.

Foreign governments, companies and wealthy individuals interacted with its programs and fundraising.

Hillary Clinton now held federal office.

That meant questions about potential conflicts of interest became politically important.

The Clinton Foundation would increasingly face scrutiny over donors, transparency and the relationship between charitable activities and the family’s political connections.

Supporters emphasized the organization’s humanitarian accomplishments.

Critics questioned aspects of its fundraising and access.

Those debates would become particularly intense years later when Hillary ran for president again.

For now, Bill Clinton continued his philanthropic work.

Then another catastrophe struck.

HAITI

On January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti.

The destruction was enormous.

Buildings collapsed.

Infrastructure was damaged.

Large numbers of people were killed or displaced.

The international community mobilized.

Bill Clinton already had significant involvement with Haiti and had been serving as a United Nations special envoy to the country.

After the earthquake, President Obama asked Clinton and former President George W. Bush to lead a fundraising effort for Haiti relief.

Once again, Clinton was paired with a former Republican president.

This time, George W. Bush himself.

The Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund raised money for relief and longer-term recovery efforts.

Clinton traveled to Haiti repeatedly.

And remarkably, it was during this period of intense activity that his heart required medical attention again.

FEBRUARY 2010

Clinton experienced chest discomfort.

Doctors examined him.

One of the grafts from his 2004 bypass operation had become blocked.

Two stents were placed in a coronary artery.

His cardiologist emphasized that Clinton had not suffered a heart attack and expected him to resume his active lifestyle.

The timing said something about Clinton’s post-presidential life.

He was no longer president.

Yet he was still traveling internationally, working on disaster recovery and maintaining a demanding schedule.

Even while preparing for the procedure, reports described him as focused on Haiti relief.

Afterward, he again returned to work.

But the repeated heart problems changed something.

Clinton became much more publicly focused on diet and cardiovascular health.

He later discussed adopting a predominantly plant-based diet and losing significant weight after his heart procedures.

People who remembered the famously fast-food-loving politician of the 1990s saw a noticeably thinner former president.

Time was becoming visible.

THE CLINTONS WERE GETTING OLDER—BUT THEIR POLITICAL STORY WASN’T

By the early 2010s, Bill Clinton was no longer the young governor Americans first encountered nationally.

His hair had turned white.

His appearance had changed.

His voice sometimes sounded different.

But politically, he remained valuable to Democrats.

He could still command an audience.

He could still explain policy in conversational language.

He could still raise money.

And he could still campaign.

One of the clearest demonstrations came during Barack Obama’s reelection campaign.

At the 2012 Democratic National Convention, Clinton delivered a lengthy speech supporting Obama.

The political symbolism was striking.

Four years earlier, Obama had defeated Hillary Clinton for the nomination.

Now Bill Clinton was making the case for Obama’s second term.

Obama went on to defeat Republican Mitt Romney.

And only months later, Hillary’s time as secretary of state ended.

Her official State Department service concluded on February 1, 2013.

For the first time in years, neither Bill nor Hillary Clinton held government office.

But almost immediately, one question began following them everywhere.

Would Hillary run again?

THE QUESTION THAT WOULDN’T DISAPPEAR

The next presidential election.

Hillary would be sixty-nine by Election Day.

Bill would be seventy.

They had already lived through one presidency.

One impeachment.

Two Senate terms for Hillary.

A presidential primary defeat.

Four years at the State Department.

Foundation controversies.

Health scares.

Decades of political battles.

Why do it again?

Because the possibility remained historic.

No woman had ever been president of the United States.

No woman had ever been nominated for president by one of America’s two major political parties.

Hillary Clinton had come closer than most in 2008.

Now the path appeared open again.

Barack Obama could not seek a third term.

The Democratic Party needed a new nominee.

And in April 2015, Hillary Clinton announced another presidential campaign.

The Clinton family was going back into battle.

THIS TIME, BILL’S ROLE WAS EVEN STRANGER

Imagine being Bill Clinton in 2015.

You have already been president.

You know what the office feels like.

You know the Oval Office.

You know Camp David.

You know Air Force One.

You know what it feels like to receive intelligence briefings.

You know what it feels like when Congress turns against you.

You know what it feels like when millions celebrate you.

You know what it feels like when millions criticize you.

And now your wife is trying to win the same office.

If Hillary won, Bill Clinton would become the spouse of a president.

Americans even joked about what title to use.

First Gentleman?

First Husband?

There was no modern precedent.

Nothing about the situation would have been normal.

But first Hillary had to win the Democratic nomination.

And once again, the supposedly straightforward path became complicated.

BERNIE SANDERS

A senator from Vermont named Bernie Sanders mounted an unexpectedly strong challenge.

Sanders identified as a democratic socialist and ran a campaign emphasizing economic inequality, health care, college costs, campaign finance and the influence of wealthy interests.

He attracted enormous enthusiasm, particularly among younger voters.

Once again, Hillary Clinton found herself in a long Democratic primary battle.

But unlike 2008, this time she prevailed.

On July 26, 2016, Democrats formally nominated Hillary Clinton for president.

She became the first woman nominated for the presidency by a major U.S. political party.

The Clinton family had made history again.

Bill Clinton had once been the Democratic nominee.

Now Hillary was.

But the Republican nominee was unlike anyone Bill Clinton had faced during his own political career.

Donald J. Trump.

TRUMP

Donald Trump was a businessman and television personality who had never previously held elected office.

He defeated a large field of Republican candidates.

His political style was confrontational.

His rallies attracted enormous attention.

His campaign challenged many conventions of presidential politics.

The 2016 election quickly became extraordinarily bitter.

Trump attacked Hillary’s record.

He attacked Bill Clinton’s record.

He raised past Clinton controversies.

Hillary attacked Trump’s temperament, record and policy positions.

Investigations and controversies dominated news coverage.

Russia became part of the story.

Hillary’s use of a private email server while secretary of state became a major issue.

The Clinton Foundation received scrutiny.

Trump’s own controversies repeatedly made headlines.

America entered the final months of the election deeply divided.

And Bill Clinton was once again in the middle of presidential politics.

But this time, he could not control the campaign.

Hillary was the candidate.

THE EMAIL CONTROVERSY

During Hillary Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state, she had used a private email system for official communications.

The issue became politically damaging.

The FBI investigated her handling of classified information.

In July 2016, FBI Director James Comey announced that the bureau would not recommend criminal charges, while sharply criticizing her handling of sensitive information.

Then, only eleven days before the election, Comey informed Congress that investigators had discovered additional emails potentially relevant to the investigation.

Days before Election Day, the FBI said its review had not changed its earlier conclusion.

But politically, the controversy had already returned to the center of the campaign.

The final days became extraordinarily tense.

Polls showed a competitive race.

Both campaigns traveled relentlessly.

Bill Clinton campaigned for Hillary.

Barack Obama campaigned for Hillary.

Michelle Obama campaigned for Hillary.

Trump held large rallies across battleground states.

Then came November 8, 2016.

ELECTION NIGHT

Many Clinton supporters expected to celebrate.

Hillary had spent years preparing for this moment.

The campaign planned an election-night event at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York.

The symbolism was obvious.

The building had a glass ceiling.

If Hillary won, she would literally stand beneath glass while symbolically breaking one of the most famous glass ceilings in American politics.

But as votes were counted, the expected celebration disappeared.

Florida remained competitive.

North Carolina moved toward Trump.

Then Ohio.

Then states Democrats had counted on.

Wisconsin.

Michigan.

Pennsylvania.

The electoral map changed.

The path narrowed.

And eventually the reality became unavoidable.

Donald Trump had won enough electoral votes to become president-elect.

Hillary Clinton won the national popular vote by nearly three million votes.

But American presidents are chosen through the Electoral College.

Trump won the Electoral College.

Bill Clinton would not return to the White House as presidential spouse.

The Clinton family’s second attempt to win the presidency had failed.

THE MORNING AFTER

Hillary Clinton delivered her concession speech on November 9.

She acknowledged the pain of defeat while telling supporters that Trump deserved an open mind and a chance to lead.

For Bill Clinton, the moment must have carried an unusual historical weight.

Again, we should not invent his private thoughts.

But the public facts alone were extraordinary.

Twenty-four years earlier, Americans had chosen Bill Clinton over George H. W. Bush.

Now Americans had rejected Hillary Clinton in the Electoral College and chosen Donald Trump.

Bill had won two presidential elections.

Hillary had lost two attempts to reach the presidency—first in the Democratic primary in 2008 and then in the general election in 2016.

The Clinton era of presidential campaigning appeared to be over.

But public life was not.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOUR FAMILY LOSES THE WHITE HOUSE?

The Clintons returned to life outside government.

Hillary wrote about the election.

Bill continued foundation activities and public appearances.

Chelsea Clinton took an increasingly prominent role in the Clinton Foundation.

But the political environment around them had changed dramatically.

Donald Trump’s presidency reshaped American politics.

The Democratic Party changed.

A new generation of politicians emerged.

The Clintons remained famous.

But they were no longer at the center of Democratic power in the way they had been during the 1990s and 2000s.

Time was moving forward.

And Bill Clinton was entering his seventies.

That mattered for another reason.

His health history had not disappeared.

THE HEART HISTORY REMAINED PART OF HIS STORY

Remember what had already happened.

2004:

major bypass surgery.

2010:

two coronary stents.

Those were serious, documented cardiovascular events.

Every time Clinton later appeared thinner…

or walked more slowly…

or was photographed looking older…

social media could turn ordinary aging into speculation.

That phenomenon is not unique to Clinton.

Public figures experience it constantly.

A photograph circulates.

Someone writes an alarming caption.

Another page repeats it.

Thousands share it.

Within hours, speculation begins looking like news.

That is precisely why a person’s documented health history must be separated from claims about their present condition.

A bypass operation in 2004 is fact.

Stents in 2010 are fact.

Those facts do not automatically verify whatever someone posts years later.

And Clinton’s next major hospitalization demonstrates exactly why verified information matters.

OCTOBER 2021

Bill Clinton was seventy-five.

He was admitted to the University of California Irvine Medical Center.

The hospitalization generated immediate concern.

Given his heart history, many people initially wondered whether he was experiencing another cardiovascular problem.

But his physicians said the hospitalization was related to an infection rather than COVID-19 or another heart event.

He received treatment and was released after several days.

Once again:

Concern was reasonable.

Speculation was not confirmation.

The distinction matters.

Especially when a famous person’s age and medical history make frightening headlines easy to believe.

Clinton recovered and returned to public appearances.

THEN CAME ANOTHER HISTORIC ELECTION

In 2020, Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump.

Bill Clinton participated in Democratic political events and continued appearing publicly.

Then came 2024.

Biden initially sought reelection before ending his campaign.

Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee.

Donald Trump was again the Republican nominee.

Bill and Hillary Clinton supported Harris.

Trump ultimately won the election and returned to the presidency in January 2025.

By this point, Bill Clinton had lived through an extraordinary span of American political history.

When he was born, Harry Truman was president.

He watched Eisenhower.

Kennedy.

Johnson.

Nixon.

Ford.

Carter.

Reagan.

George H. W. Bush.

Then Clinton himself became president.

After him came George W. Bush.

Obama.

Trump.

Biden.

And Trump again.

The child born in 1946 had now witnessed nearly eight decades of American political transformation.

And he was still appearing in public.

THAT IS WHY ONE HEADLINE CAN TRAVEL SO FAR

Now we can finally begin connecting this enormous historical journey back toward the reason our story started.

Imagine seeing the words:

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bill Clinton.”

Why do people stop?

Partly because the wording sounds serious.

But there’s something deeper.

For millions of Americans, Bill Clinton isn’t simply an eighty-year-old former politician.

He is connected to memories.

The 1990s.

The saxophone.

The 1992 campaign.

Hillary.

The White House.

Monica Lewinsky.

Impeachment.

Economic debates.

George H. W. Bush.

Barack Obama.

Donald Trump.

The Clinton Foundation.

The 2016 election.

For some people, those memories are positive.

For others, negative.

For many, complicated.

But recognition is powerful.

When someone has occupied public consciousness for more than thirty years, a headline about that person can feel personal even to people who have never met them.

And when that person has a documented history of serious medical procedures, concern can spread even faster.

But history teaches us something important here.

Bill Clinton’s medical story has repeatedly been reported publicly when serious events actually occurred.

In 2004, doctors discussed his bypass operation.

In 2010, doctors discussed his stent procedure.

In 2021, his representatives and physicians provided information about his hospitalization.

Those are documented events.

That is very different from taking an alarming social-media caption and assuming it must represent a new medical emergency.

BILL CLINTON WAS NOW SOMETHING HE HAD NEVER BEEN BEFORE

Old.

Not politically old.

Not “experienced.”

Actually old.

The energetic governor who ran for president in 1992 had been forty-six.

The former president undergoing bypass surgery in 2004 was fifty-eight.

The political spouse campaigning for Hillary in 2016 was seventy.

By 2026, Bill Clinton was eighty.

Time had transformed the image Americans remembered.

And aging itself can be difficult for the public to process when someone has been famous for decades.

We remember celebrities at the age when we first encountered them.

Actors remain frozen in old movies.

Musicians remain young inside songs.

Presidents remain frozen inside campaign footage.

Then a new photograph appears twenty or thirty years later.

The contrast can feel startling.

But aging isn’t breaking news.

It is life.

And that distinction becomes especially important in an online environment built to reward dramatic headlines.

THE INTERNET CHANGED THE WAY WE EXPERIENCE CONCERN

When Clinton underwent bypass surgery in 2004, social media as we know it barely existed.

Facebook had only recently launched.

YouTube did not yet exist publicly.

Twitter did not exist.

Instagram did not exist.

TikTok certainly did not exist.

Most Americans learned about Clinton’s surgery through television, newspapers and major news websites.

By the 2020s, the information environment had completely transformed.

Anyone could publish.

Anyone could share.

A dramatic sentence could reach millions before a reporter confirmed what it meant.

And the words:

“Thoughts and prayers…”

carry emotional weight.

They imply that something has happened.

Sometimes something has.

Sometimes the post is referring to an old event.

Sometimes it is vague engagement bait.

Sometimes crucial context is missing.

Sometimes multiple people are confused with one another.

And sometimes a story begins with a kernel of truth and becomes increasingly inaccurate each time another page rewrites it.

That is why the story of Bill Clinton cannot end with a vague headline.

We need to ask:

What actually happened?

What has been confirmed?

What belongs to his documented medical history?

And what is simply speculation being repeated online?

BUT BEFORE WE ANSWER THAT, THERE IS ONE MORE CHAPTER

Because the years after 2016 deserve attention of their own.

The Clinton family had lost its attempt to return to the White House.

Bill was aging.

Hillary’s electoral career had effectively ended.

Chelsea was increasingly involved in the family’s public work.

The political world was changing rapidly.

And Bill Clinton’s own public image was being reconsidered through a modern lens.

The #MeToo movement changed the way Americans discussed power, workplace relationships and allegations of sexual misconduct.

The Lewinsky scandal was revisited.

Monica Lewinsky herself became a prominent voice on public shaming.

Old controversies returned with new questions.

The Clinton Foundation faced continuing scrutiny and changes.

Bill Clinton published books and continued speaking publicly.

And his health remained something the public watched closely.

Then, as he approached eighty, something interesting happened.

He became not merely a former president.

He became one of America’s elder former presidents.

A living connection to a political era that had begun more than three decades earlier.

And that brings us almost completely back to today.

PART 7 — BILL CLINTON AT 80: HIS HEALTH HISTORY, HIS LIFE TODAY, AND WHY THE INTERNET KEEPS WORRYING ABOUT HIM

More than thirty years have passed since Bill Clinton first walked into the White House as president.

The world has changed.

America has changed.

The Democratic Party has changed.

The Republican Party has changed.

The media has changed.

The internet has changed almost everything about how information travels.

And Bill Clinton has changed too.

He is no longer the forty-six-year-old candidate playing saxophone on late-night television.

He is an eighty-year-old former president with a documented history of cardiovascular disease and other hospitalizations.

That history makes public concern understandable.

But it also makes misinformation easier to spread.

Because when people already know someone has experienced serious health problems, they are more likely to believe the next frightening headline without asking where it came from.

So before repeating another rumor…

before assuming a photograph proves illness…

before turning a vague message into a diagnosis…

there is one thing we need to do.

Separate what is actually known about Bill Clinton’s health from what the internet merely claims to know.

And once we do that, the headline that began this entire story starts to look very different.

PART 7 begins there.

PART 6 — AFTER THE WHITE HOUSE: HEALTH SCARES, HUMANITARIAN WORK, HILLARY’S RISE, AND THE RETURN TO PRESIDENTIAL
